Does anyone have a general opinion of log furniture? Design, appeal, marketablity, etc. Or, if you think it has no place in this format.

I like it for a cabin. It would have more in common with the rustic/green side of woodworking. Roy did a great show on it on the Woodwrights Shop.
I am building a log and plank table for my cabin, and have a thread going about how to fasten the top. There are several high-level craftrsmen involved in this website who make rustic furniture oiut of logs and branches.
In a nutshell, it is a bit different that what many do, but ristic furniture an be very beauticul and need not be crude. It can be quite challenging to make, and very interesting.
So, fire away.
Get thee to the Adirondacks. It is used en masse there.
http://www.danielmack.com is a good start. He has some great books as well. Do a search on yahoo. There are sites already dedicated to twig and log furniture. Everything you seek is already out there, you just have to find it. Don't think this type of furniture fits in with the format of FWW. Actually FWW is extremely conservative in it's scope of furniture. Too safe!

Rick:I'll grant you that rusti9c furniture is not a main thrust, but neither is it eschewed. There are examples of rustic furniture in the on-line gallery, thee have been articles in FWW itself, and I just bought a video on rustic furniture from the on-line bookstore here. Joe
Hi Rick ,
A friend of mine started manufacturing Log or what he called Pole furniture about 20 years ago . He had specialized tooling and machinery made to create furniture products from poles .
Much of what he did has gone to Lodge type resorts and hotels and such , and some had upholstery and some had woven splint seats and backs . Beds Table bases for Glass tops Directors chairs out of poles as well .
It's certainly not a refined work such as Hepplewhite or any other Master makers works , but none the less it is wood working and building and creating . Some of the joinery is quite traditional , true it is much more crude a product but deliberately so .
For a regular furniture / cabinet shop , log and pole pieces can present a new challenge .

It CAN be crude as all get out, but there are real masterpieces of rustic furniture as well, with great beauty.

I have started making shelves and wall hangings with old oak beams and floor boards that I have salvaged from homes being renovated in my village and areas around me. Any tips on finishes. Now I´m coating themwith a mixture of used car oil and diesel full. It is something I picked up here ( in Spain) then I seal them with an oil-based varnish (hope I have translated the product correctly). I have sold 2. I worry about compatabilty of finishes. Would like to start with chairs, tables...ect. Ideas appreciated.
I know one uses what one has available but you should investigate the hazards of Diesel and motor oil as a finish by seraching the web.
Cabins are not the only place for rustic raw wood. I enjoy working with a mix of raw and finished wood. The contrast enhances both. I built this gate http://www.ponohouse.com/ for my brothers house on Maui (more pictures in the link to "Ponohouse gallery". The frame is lyptus and the raw wood is cedar I harvested from my treefarm. I've built some chairs in a similar fashion. IMNSHO well built rustic furniture should demand a reasonably high price....nice joinery is actually more difficult because of the odd angles.
An online buddy of mine at the Lumberjocks.com forum builds very nice "rustic" furniture.

I agree. There are many cases in which "rustic" furniture. doors/gates are in reality quite sophisticated.

Here in the ski country of Colorado, there are dozens of trophy houses selling for north of ten million dollars that are stuffed with log furniture. It fits like a tee in this environment.
