G’day all,
I’m currently in the process of building Lon Schleining’s “Ultimate” work bench and I’m seeking information on it that is not covered in his plans. I’m wondering how to cut the dog holes in the veritas twin screw end vice jaw. I’ve thought about making the jaw in two peices, cutting the slot for the bench dog with a dado blade then gluing the two halves together. However, I was wondering if I need to cut an angled slot so the dogs tilt 3 degrees forward in the same manner as the dog holes in the bench top do (3 degree tilt toward the vice). I assume doing it this way would exert a downward pressure and make for a stronger hold but I’m in a delema about the best way to do this. Any ideas?

I would think the angle would be needed on the vise dog holes as well as on the bench, and as you mentioned, in opposing directions.
I think you could build it the same way you described, but when you cut your dado slot, you could place another piece of wood underneath your jaw piece which is angled 3 degrees from the horizontal. Or even just attach a shim to one end of the piece. That way the top of your dado cut should have a 3 degree taper.
Gordon unless your dead set on having square dogs ,I would give careful consideration to round dogs .The brass dogs from veritas are excellent but the holdfasts they do are something else, would rate them amongst the most useful items I've ever purchased and all fit into a standard 19mm hole.
Gordon,
I realise I won't be answering your question here but....have you thought of using round dog holes instead of the traditional square ones? These can easily be drilled and the various round dogs you can buy all have a 3 degree taper built into their flat faces, on the top inch of the dog.
The ability to rotate the round dog so the flat face on the top can grip angled or round-edge things is an advantage, I find. But I suppose if you already have square holes on the bencch......
If you do still want square dogs, would it not be easier to put 3 degrees on the dog rather than in the hole (although you would need to always use the dog the right way round)? I think I've seen commercially sold square dogs somewhere that have such a taper on their top end.

Went through the same thing with mine. Did this.

As for the 2-3 degree tilt thing - you can make you're own dogs
and cut the angle in the face of the jaw
Having "square" dogholes near the edge of the bench comes in
handy when working on narrow parts
Nothing says you can have both square and round dogholes
and dogs. Round dogs have the advantage of turning in the
hole to adapt to curved pieces.
