Just wondering why small boxes aren’t made more often with a vertical grain orientation? No larger than 5″ square and 3/8 to 1/2 stock. I think they look good but if there is a reason why not I’d be happy to know it.

For me it's because I inset top surfaces cut the lids off my boxes most of the time. With the grain running on the vertical the top's edges would be unlikely to survive 4 trips across the table saw.
I have done solid and veneered boxes with vertical grain when I'm making a separate solid wood top or no top at all.
Wood movement would be my guess.
