Just wondering if anyone has tried the veneered long board from issues #253?
Chris writes “I make the deck from eight plies of 1/16th-in-thick veneers, with two cross grained plies balanced between the straight ones”…. and “…. Then stack them alternating the grain….”.
I’m not 100% sure what he means by that – two cross grained plies are not enough to alternate with 6 straight grain plies.
All I could think of is perhaps he means to use two plies to make each cross grain layer, but there’s no evidence of him doing this in the article photos.
Any one got any idea?
Thanks
Dave

Longboard
Hey Dave,
I worked with Chris on the article for 253, was there during the build, and I happen to own the board in the shoot.
The stack should be put together with: face veneer/long grain/long grain/cross grain/long grain/long grain/cross grain/long grain/long grain/face veneer.
The real stress is put on the board from nose to tail, so that's why there are more "long grain" plies than cross.
The board, built as above, has pretty much the perfect amount of spring (for reducing vibrations) while staying tight and rigid (for better responsiveness).

Hi Dillon
Thanks for getting back to me with that extra info! I was thinking that was going to be the case but wanted to make sure before I commited to a glue-up!
I also found on http://www.roarockit.com that when you order a kit you can specify how many veneers of each grain direction you want, so I think I'm good to go. Now I just need to find someone that will ship one of the kits out to NZ! (Sadly roarockit doesn't - trying to hit up their australian distributor though...)
Thanks again
Dave
