I would like advice as to how to proceed to make longitudinal beads 16″ long on a tapered leg 1 1/2″ diam tapering to 1 1/8″. On either end of the beads is a broad cove. Thank you for any advice.

I cover this subject is some depth in my book Turning for Furniture published by Taunton Press. I also show the process in the Taunton video tape of the same name (Turning for Furniture). Both are available from Taunton or from my website http://www.conoverworkshops.com. The process involves using a router, special bit and a home made jig. My book gives plans for the jig. I have attached photos of the jig in operation which should pretty well give you the gist of how this works. I got the bit from Eagle America.
I might add that in Federal times these flutes were hand carved. For one or two legs this is a good opinion and may take no longer than building the jig and doing the job. Also the rouder cut flutes need a good deal of clean up--often with gouges. Phil Low gives good instructions in doing the job by hand in his Fine Woodworking article Building a Sheridan Bed.

Thanks for a very useful answer. I think I will go ahead doing it by hand as described by Lowe.
Excellent choice!Rerards,
