Okay, this is gonna sound silly BUT: I bought a used Delta lathe (Its the model that was used in schools) and I have everything I need EXCEPT……..it doesn’t have a tail stock. I have a tail stock but it is really beat up and Delta wants over $600.00 for a new one and that’s out of the question………
Anybody out there have an extra Delta tail stock they want to sell? Thanks.

Go to the Old Woodworking Machine site, owwm.com, and check their classifieds. If you are really lucky somebody will be selling one, if not you can make a "parts needed" posting.

Typical with school lathes, they remove the tail and it gets lost at the auction. Next auction look everywhere possable for parts lyeing around. Many times loose stuff is piled in a box and sold with the wrong machine.
Anyway, contact Harold Barker in Ada, OH 419.634.7328 He has 3 pole barns with old parts. I send another knothead there for one a while back, he picked one up cheap.

............Thanks for the info......tail stock on ebay right now....and it's just what I'm lookin' for.
'Nother question: Old motor on my delta is on its last leg. It's a 1 horse and almost as old as I am......With this tail stock and new motor I'd be sittin' on top-a-the-world..... BUT, I'm assumin' theres bearings in my lathe and I'm wonderin' if its a big problem to replace them if they ever go out........Anybody out there have any info they can share about that??? Again, thanks for everything.....
Bodgerman,
Before you go junking the motor, it might be a repulsion/induction motor and not on it's last leg and merely needing to be adjusted (simple enough that even human beings can do it). Can you forward to be (e-mail addreee below) a picture of the end of the motor opposite the shaft end?
On the other hand, if you truly don't want the motor and want a new motor, I'd be happy to spend the cash to have the old motor (after seeing a picture of course).
The same offer stands with anyone with a repulsion/induction motor who feels they want to part with it/them.

Hey DJK. Thank you for your help. I'm buying a tail stock from old Harold. Talked to him on the phone and it sounds like he will take care of me. I've been thinking 'bout buying a new lathe but have changed my mind.....the motor on my lathe is old and on its last leg but I think now I will just replace that. One concern also is the lathe itself. Do the bearings ever go out on those things? I hate to spend the money for a new motor, the tail stock ($125.00 plus $14.00 for postage) and then have the lathe go to hell. Those bearings must be replaceable aren't they??
Anyway, thats problably more than you want to know.......Just wanted to say thanks .....
Yes, the bearings can be changed. Obtain a parts brake down from Delta or http://www.owwm.com. While it's beeing refurbed I would change the bearings with a set of sealed abec3. I've never changed bearings in a lathe but I'm sure it's simple. As for the motor if its bad pick one up on ebay, I do it often, a good deal can be had. Just be certain of what you're purchasing. Why do you think the current motor is bad? If it's a Marathon single phase repulsion induction type, I may be interested in it if you swap it out. Could use some internal parts.Delta is wierd on some of the older machines in respect to the proper info. I have a '63 Unidrill ( not very old ) that Delta does not have any paper work on. Harold is a riot to speak with. I need to run down there soon just to take another look around.Dave Koury
DJK......... I don't know squat about motors. Mine is big and black and setting on the bottom shelf of my lathe stand. I depend on a friend of mine when it comes to motors. I'm going out now and get some info off the plate and will pass that along......I think it is a 1 horsepower and if I remember right it is 1750 rpm.....whatever that means. Honest, I know nothin' about 'em. Now, when I turn it on, it sounds like it is "laboring" for about the first 20 seconds and then it kicks in and runs properly. It is big and old......I'll get back to ya. Thanks.

Dave: Funny you should mention Delta being a little weird with info on their older machines. I was lookin' for info about my lathe. It is an old Delta and the serial number on it is: 115-291. I gave 'em that number and Amy says "What you have there is a 1961 Circular saw". I said "Really"? Now, I ain't up on my carpentry and woodworking and I'll be the first one to admit it BUT, I'm pretty sure I know the difference between a circular saw and a lathe. I went back and checked the number and the plate shows no sign of being tampered with.......so, I kinda gave up on Delta.
ANYWAY...... Here is the info on the motor I'm talkin' about. It has two plates on it. The oldest lookin' plate just reads: Porter Electric Company, Minneapolis, MN. The number on the plate is: AT0371-2-3. And then the number 2365 is stamped into the plate.
The second plate has:
"B-Line"
Type: RM AC, Frame:760, MS: 3170, ES 104, HP 1, Volts 110/220, Cyc 60, PH 1, Amps 16/8, RPM 1750, Temp rating 40C cont
Serial number 1108611
Then: Brown Brockmeyer Co. Inc., Dayton Ohio.
I'm lookin' for a new motor. Was gonna use my old one for an anchor but maybe we should talk.......Thanks. Lookin' forward to hearing fm ya.
Dave.....pls take a look at that last msg "From Bodgerman to Bodgerman"....got information in there that I want you to see.......don't know how that happened.....thanks.....
Like Mr. Bohn, if you can send a pict. to me it would be great. See, one man's trash is another man's treasure.Dave Koury
Unisaw and DJK..........I'll get a photo off to you soon.
Thanks.
Bodge,
Gather up your model number and serial no. Using the attached link You'll find Sobel Machinery. I highly reccomend Sobel He has helped me many times in the past, when I rebuilt some of my three lathes.
You might ask for a manual (reprint) Steinmetz.
