I am getting to the point in my furniture making journey where I am comfortable with my joinery skills and wish to move on to finishing. I know the basics and use only a limited array of finishes. I am looking for a good source to read about all the different types of finishes. I am reading “Understanding Wood” by R. Bruce Hoadly to learn more of the science of wood. Any suggestions on finishing books would be great! Thanks!

Understanding Wood Finishing by Bob Flexner and published by Rodale is the bible in this area, a fantastic book.
*Hand Applied Finishes by Jeff Jewett and the Flexner book are to two best IMHO. You should read both.
*Jeff Jewitt has a seminer chatroom on wed. nigts at 9:30est. at badgerpond.com you can learn alot from all the guys in this room check it out. He also has his own supply co. call homested finishes.
*The best book about French polishing is 'French Polishing' by Alan Waterhouse and Philippa Barstow. It is blowing my own trumpet as I am one of the authors, but other people have told us what a good book it is. It is currently out of print but you should be able to borrow it from a library. We are always willing to offer advice , over the net, the phone or in person.
*Would Frank Stanley, who e-mailed us on 2nd November contact us again as my reply to his e-mail keeps being returned to me. Your e-mail address must be wrong, and my lengthy reply may be of help.Philippa [email protected]
