I’m looking for ideas for a good joint. The application is baby cradles and the problem is joining the long side rails of the cradle to the end frames. Below are links to some pictures that show the areas where I’m looking for a better joint. I’ve tried dowels and screws but I’m just not happy with the finish results and assembly is a real challenge.
Maybe square tenons with shallow mortises or maybe lathe turned round tenons on each long rail with a shallow drilled mortise in the end frames.

Ron, if I were building that I would use a through mortise and tenon. That joint will need to be strong and I like the look of a through tenon.
Some say Jamaca is the best, but I've never been.
Sorry, I couldn't resist. ;-)
Pardon my spelling,
Mike
Make sure that your next project is beyond your skill and requires tools you don't have. You won't regret it.
Ron, there seems to be a lot of short grain in the joint area of the corner. A tenon may split the joint, especially a square tenon.
One way might be to use the pegged stretcher joint used on tables. then the tenon does not have to be too tight and the stress is directed to the rail shoulders with less risk of splitting. It could be in keeping with the design and may of course be adjusted after assembly.
Hope this helps, David.
