Hi – I am kind of new to the woodworking thing, and am still looking for resources. I live in MD and am looking for a good place to get a varity of wood types. Home Depot and Lowes only have Red Oak, and sometimes Aspen. I am looking for Cedar, Walnut, Mahogany, etc.
Anyone know of a good web site to order from or a good brick and mortar place near southern MD? Thx

I get 99.9% of my lumber from Groff and Groff. They will ship either UPS or common carrier depending on the amount. I've never had anything less than great service and superior lumber from them. I have also had good service from Hearn Hardwoods.

I order from Groff and Groff as well and have always been pleased. Here are a couple others. Good Hope is also in Penn. Herbine is closer to you, he is in Virginia. All of them are the highest quality and good to deal with.

I usually try to keep my eye out for people advertising in the local trading newspaper. People acquire and sell wood for various reasons. I try to pick up good stuff cheap and sit on it. Alot of times it is rough and not all premium wood. However, this is a good way to proceed .

The L.L. Johnson Lumber Co. of Charlotte Mich. has everything, I'm sure they ship.

hearne hardwoods is in PA (oxford) close to maryland. they have a lot of hard to find stuff and their wood is very stable. i live in ny and drive down there to get my lumber. they also have an awsome website with a virtual inventory so you can look a the board before you commit. they will also send you more detailed pics is you ask nicley. about 15min from good hope lumber. i know the guys down at hearne so they cut me a good price.<yep, i'm biased> lol if you go there ask to see the band saw! very nice! designed and built by some amish guy for the navy to saw the decks for navel ships back in the day. http://www.hearnehardwoods.comhave fun,

Swamp,
I live in Richmond and get my lumber from Northland Forest Products. They are located about 3/4 of the way to Charlottesville in a bump in the road called Zion's Crossroads (Troy VA). Their website is http://www.northlandforest.com/ They have excellent prices on rough lumber. They also sell presurfaced lumber. They have another outlet at

All - Thanks for your replies - If I don't find wood now I will have no excuse!!!
