looking for a new compound mitre saw
Hi
I’m looking at purchasing a new compound mitre saw and leaning towards the Rigid 10″. (can’t beat that life time warranty) Any comments or suggestions or personal preferences

What are you going to be doing with it? I have a bosch slider,so I can't comment on Ridgid. There are reviews here: http://www.taunton.com/FWN/ToolGuide/ToolguideDirectory.aspx?dir=Miter+Saws
Gary Katz also has an write-up here: http://www.taunton.com/FWN/ToolGuide/ToolGuidePDF.aspx?id=25187
A good blade helps any saw.
Are you going to spring the $$ for a slider, or are you wanting a regular compound miter saw?? The slider contingent here at Knots is huge ;-) As far as comments or suggestions go, I would recommend a 12" rather than 10" if you're not going to get a slider. I bought the Bosch 12"...le's see, last year? or the year before? That extra capacity is very handy and the cost was quite reasonable.

I have the Ridgid 10 inch about three years old. It was good value compared to equivalent Delta. The degree markers are stamped into the steel, not a stuck on decal. However, I must say I have a heck of a time getting it to stay set on 90 degree angles. No matter how I tinker, I can't seem to get a perfectly square cut. I would suggest comparing the locking mechanism versus other brands. Nevertheless the Ridgid is OK, but you need to order their calendar too.
The Rigid 12" 1290LZ is the way to go. A little big and heavy to be moving around all the time, but thats why they made the msuv. I purchased both almost two years ago. The 1290LZ is a great sliding mitre saw. Haven't had a problem with it what so ever. The price is right and the quality is there too. When I was setting up my shop I looked at all the so called big boys and to me they wern't worth the money. Your paying for their name. I found Rigid to be great quality for a reasonable price. The TS3650 table saw, their plainer /jointer, 13" plainer, 1290LZ m saw, and the band saw are good values. ( Floor models only )
Thanks for all of the info but I just got a deal on the new Hitachi C10FCH Laser, Hard to pass a bargain on a good tool with a % year warranty.
Thanks Everyone
Cheers
My Rigid 1290LZ has a lazor. Hence the " LZ " It also came with a lifetime warrenty. The cost was $ 499.99 on sale. NIB
I have the Bosch 12" slider and I am very pleased with the saw. I've used the 12" non-slider DeWalts, which are also good but lack the flexibility you get with the slider. The Bosch can miter an awesome 60 degrees--I haven't had to cut at this angle yet, but it sure helps in folding the puppy up for putting back into the truck.
My thoughts are, if you get the 10", unless you are cutting 2x4s and 3" crown, you'll come to the point where you wished you had a 12". If you get a non-slider, ditto for wishing you had got the slider.
Watch for deals at Amazon and you can get one for many $$ off. I got mine for about $450. The money I saved I used for a Forrest blade.
I have 2 sliders, one is a Makita LS1013 and just bought the new model of the Dewalt 12 inch. I have had the Makita for about 15 years and it has been rock solid. It has travelled quite a few miles in the back of my truck and always stayed true. I like the Dewalt as it has a good number of presets and the bevel adjustment is easy to reach. ( not as easy as the new Bosch which is up front). I have only had it for 6 mos and it seems to perform well. If I was buying another one I think it would be the new 12 in Bosch slider if money was not a factor. I think one of the best Bargains out there now is the older model 10 in Bosch that has the fixed handle. They are selling for $379 Canadian which is about $320 USD. They are a good saw and you can't beat the price. Someone else made a very good suggestion and that is to purchase a good quality blade. I must admit that the LS 1013 comes with a half decent blade and they use the same blade today. The dewalt blade was garbage and I would stay away from thin kerf blades. I have never bought a tool because of the warranty and and not a big fan of HD. Trying to find knowledgeable people in those stores is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. Good luck with your purchase and more importantly have a great weekend.
