If you know the diameter and the threads per inch (TPI), you can check at Penn State Industries (http://www.pennstateind.com); they carry a wide variety of lathe centers for all sizes of machinery. Other sources would be Grizzly Tools or Woodworkers Supply.
If you have a WOOD lathe, there are two standard taper sizes for both the headstock and the tailstock. They are the #1 Mores Taper (#1 MT) and a # 2 MT. There are also a number of other sizes. If the inboard end has a hole of aprox. 3/4" it is a # 2 MT. 1/2" is a #1 MT. Go to the nearest Sears hardware section (don't Boo me!) and purchase one of each size. Try them out and return the one that doesn't fit. For other sizes you may have to go to specialty dealers or find a sleeve adapter that will fit your lathe on the outside and a #2 MT on the inside. One good source is MSC in Deer Park, NY. You may have to do a google search. I believe it is http://www.mscdirect.com but I don't have my references with me at the moment.
Hope this helps.... SawdustSteve
