Looking for dust collection for a planer
I have a delta portalbe planer, the 300 model and it makes a heck of a lot of sawdust. I filled a 33 gallon trash can last week smoothing 6 rough-sawn boards. I finally got a shop vac and I wanted to get some attachements to accomodate my tools. Where can I get an attachement to fit onto my planer? I looked at Lowe’s and they don’t sell one.

Here's the Delta chute on Amazon. That's the good news. The bad news is, a shop vac might no do the trick. I tried my huge Craftsman "shop vac" on my 12.5" Delta planer, and it just didn't have enough suction to keep the chips clear. It caused them to back up and ding the wood (these weren't really wide piece either).
The 1.5HP Jet dust collector works great.
PS: You need a reducer too, to take the 4" to 2 or whatever.

Bill,
For the time being (until I get my DC system) I hook my Makita 12" up to a "6" horsepower Genie Shop Vac. It makes a ton of noise however (more than the planer) so hearing protection is required. The good news is that the Genie can keep up with the planer (my two smaller shop vacs could not).Mark
Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk, cut it with an ax.
Bill - WWing stores that sell DC supplies should have an adapter that will fit. You're likely to find that bucket of your shop vac filling up rapidly. You might want to consider building or buying a separator lid for your 33 gallon trash can, and run that between the planer and the vac so that the trash can takes the bulk of the chips.
I love to throw this one out when the opportunity arises:

Very creative!

Forest.... I just loved that one... LOL....
I never use dust collection for my planer... I like all the chips on the floor... Amazing how big of a pile of chips you can get... At least it's not DUST!
Hi Will. I used to think it wasn't dust, until I planed some walnut. Oooopsie. Yep, that's dust alright. Cedar does it to my nose too.
Definitely not as much dust as created by sanding or sawing, but dust nonetheless. I'm a happy camper now, with the Jet DC "sucking big-time."forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
but dust nonetheless.......... I cut a 1/32... you use 1/64?
Who knows! I cut "a little bit" and then when I get real close to finished thickness I cut "a very tiny bit" to finish it off.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
My #4 planer does not have a dust chute? Does yours? The Undisciplined Life Is Not Worth Examining.

Ya got me GOOD on that one.. LOL...
I have an 8" jointer and 13" planer and finally bought a 2 bagger Woodtec Vacuum from Woodworkers Supply a few years ago. What a difference. This year I bought a Delta Ceiling Mounted Air Handler to clean the air. You should see the fine dust I have been breathing all those years. And remember that it's mounted on the ceiling.
My Ridgid Industrial Vac is not even in the running when you want to collect stuff from these machines.
I thank my maker that he gave the forethought to always wear a face mask. Remember the dust lingers long after you shut off the machines and it's going into your lungs.
A shop vac has impellor blades designed for high vacuum, not high air volume. For dust collection on a planer, you will need high air volume and at least a 4" hose. It's all in how the impellors are designed.

Thanks everyone. I just have a small shop vac, mostly for vacuming the car (handheld vac portable type). I thought it might be in my best interest to use it but after reading the replies here, I'll have to keep clearing my workbench every 2 or 3 passes through the planer. At least I found someone that can use the chips/dust.
