I’m looking for good sources of surfaced hardwood lumber in Northern Virginia. I live in Alexandria and there are a few places that are reasonably close (Smoot, Woodcraft) but none of them are quite what I’m looking for.
Any suggestions?

Hey bub,
There's a guy out in the Plains VA named Manierre (sp?) who runs a shop called Log Works, I think. I've seen him at a few woodworking shows. I used to get his newsletter but I moved so I'm currently off the list. His is all in the rough but he has some remarkable domestic hardwoods. Lots of figuring, spalting and the like.
You can also try a shop out in Springfield, probably listed in the Yellow Pages under mill work. I can't think of the name of it this second. They used to retail lumber and advertise in the classified section of FWW.
If I think of that name I'll repost. Sorry for the "senior moment." Must be the lipitor. I know I'll think of it as soon as I stop trying to.

There's a VaW.Va listing for hardwoods in the classifieds of FWW.
I live in Sterling, VA (not insanely far from Alexandria). I have found Tart lumber to be a good source. They have a decent amount of wood in stock (rought and milled) and if they don't have it, they can get you anything you want in the rough and they have a full milling shop onsite if you need it. Their located at the corner of Rt. 28 and Church Rd. in Sterling. Their in the yellow pages. Give'm a look.

Have you tried Northern Forest Products in Manassas? This is the information from their web site:
Manassas Retail Outlet
9300 Litho Lane
Manassas, VA 20110

I buy lumber from their Troy, VA site and find a great selection at very reasonable prices (better than I can get in Richmond). The trouble for you may be that most of it is rough cut. Call them to see what they have in stock.
Have you tried Colonial Hardwoods in Springfield, VA. They stock many different types of wood and alot of it. They will also mill anything you want milled on their Northfield machines. A great place to select wood from.
