Looking for materials supplier in Madison, WI
Hi all.
I’m hoping there are some people here from the Madison, WI area. I’m fairly new to the area and looking for a few good places to buy marterials for projects.
I’d like to find a place with a good selection of domestic and (if possible) exotic woods in various forms and sizes.
Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Two words - phone book. ;-)
Exotic wood supply
Small quantities can be purchased from Woodcraft in the Westgate mall. They can order larger quatities but the ability to pick through a lot for pieces is limited. Workbench Tool Co on Perry St. has some decent wood if you need the more common cherry, maple, walnut varieties but does not carry the exotics. You may need to travel a bit for a good choice. Kettle Morraine Lumber has a good variety but is a 2 hour drive (http://kmhardwoods.com/hardwood.php). Unfortunately, the best source was a lumberyard on the northeast side of town that closed a few years ago. Good luck.

nice place
You have some options. I just started supporting a plant there so I've only been there a couple times. However you could do what I did when I moved to PA and did not know a soul. While I love woodcraft, they are expensive. Go local. Here are some tools I used some more productive than others but ya never know. I tend to be a 100-200 or more bf at a time because its just so much cheaper that way. Also I'm assuming you have equipment to finish wood so your looking for rough.
http://www.woodweb.com People post from all over with wood to sell could be some in your area.
http://www.woodfinder.com This is a tool that will find participating retailers & wholesalers based on zipcode. I had success with this in IL when I lived there
http://www.searchtempest.com This is an awsome tool that will search all the craigslists in an area defined by mile radius to you based on key wood search. Thats how I found my current supplier thats about a 2hr drive from me but great stuff at great prices. Just an old retired guy and I ended up buyin about 750 bf of cherry/poplar/maple from him by is post in cl.
Finally find a sawmill supplier in your area and they will have names and go hunting. Based on your proximity to wood I'd think you should not have an issue depending on the species you want.
One last one find a WW club - Any good luck
I like Woodworkers supply, which is a couple blocks from Workbench Tool. So if you can't fid it at one, try the other.
