I recently acquired a Stanley Bedrock 605 plane from a flea market, didn’t pay much for it. Does anyone have any experience with this model, good or bad?
Thanks,
Ted

Bedrock 605 is one of the best Stanley's to own. How good of condition is it in? Is the bed cracked, blade rusted, handles broke?
Mike
bed and blade have light rust pitting, nothing deep or serious, handles are intact and look o.k. for it's age. shoule only need some cleaning up and tuning to make it very usable.
I am new to hand planes, have been a woodworker for a couple of years but want to try handplane to smooth table and cabinet tops and such. Hope this is a good plane for the job.
Pitting on the bed is not a problem, it just scares away collectors. The blade should be free from any rust or pitting or you won't be able to get a good edge on it. If the rust and pitting on the blade is real bad, consider buying a replacement Hock blade or a Lie-Nielsen that fit's old Stanley's. Tune it up and sharpen the blade and see how it works. If you need help tuning the plane there are a lot of good books out there that are chop full of info. One of them just came out this year called Hand Tool Essentials by Popular Woodworking Books. Or you can get The Handplane Book by Garrett Hack. Both are excellent reads. The Bedrocks are considered to be the best planes Stanley made so you got a winner!

Wonderful! I was hoping it was a good one, I had read only a little about planes before buying this one and was hoping I had made a good choice.
I am going to replace the blade with a Hock blade, I had planned on that right off the bat.
Thanks for the advice and the info.

i too have picked up a few old hand planes at fleamarkets, there's nothing like taking a junky looking old tool and turning it into a working instrument
i picked up a stanley #78 rebate plane, tuned it up, and used it on a job the next day to the delight of a client!!
