I saw in the paper or a magazine that they make surge protectors or power strips for computers that have certain outlets that are switched on by another outlet. Say for example your scanner is only on when the computer is on. The idea being that you save electricity by only using the scanner when the computer is on.
I was thinking of using one of these as a controller for table saw dust collection. Plug the shop vac in so that it only gets power when the saw comes on and just leave the vac in the on position all the time.
Anyone know where to get a power strip like this and how much they cost?

There exist switched outlets specifically for woodworking equipment that I think would work much better. You can get them from Woodcraft, Rockler, etc. One brand is i-Socket.
The problem with the computer-oriented ones is that they may not have enough power capacity. A scanner consumes maybe 100 W at most; a 1 HP dust collector is closer to 1000 W. The woodworking ones also include a shutoff delay, so that the dust collection runs for a few extra seconds after the tool is turned off, to help clear the line.

the good thing about the woodworking ones is that some can keep the dust collecter on for a fewsecond after the machine is turned off.
Ditto to what Steve's saying -- it's important to use something designed for the kind of amps your tools pull! Look on the motor plate of your saw -- how many amps are listed at the voltage your saw is currently wired for??? Same with the vacuum.
I believe Sears sells a set-up like your asking about, but not at all sure it's heavy-duty enough to manage those two together.
Bill,
What kind of saw do you have? If it has a magnetic starter, you can wire the dust collector to the switch on the saw. If this is the case, let me know and I'll give you the info to wire in the DC.

Second what Forestgirl said. You can buy an adapter at Sears for $20. I use one to automatically turn on the shop vac when I'm using my biscuit joiner or sander. I also have one hooked up to a dedicated shop vac on my bandsaw. Works keen.
