Looking for Source of Thin Carpet Tape
I am looking for a current source of thin carpet tape. It is a double-sided white plastic tape with no reinforcing fibers. In the tape industry, I suspect that it is considered a type of film tape. This tape was once stocked at the big box stores, and more recently, at Ace Hardware outlets, where it was available in a nominal 2″ width. None of these earlier sources continue to carry the tape. I found it very useful for adhering routing templates and for holding thin stock to a backer board while cutting or shaping. Because of its minimal thickness, it was more convenient in these applications than the more common reinforced tape.

I think this is the stuff you're looking for:

I know what you are talking about. I bought some a few years ago for, hoping to secure a hallway runner in our old house and bitched about because it was too thin! LOL
Why not ask a carpet retailer?
I'm not sure if this is what you're referring to but it's made by 3M/Scotch and it's called VHB (Very High Bonding) tape. I've never heard it referred to as "carpet tape" tape but it's a thin rubber cement based double sided adhesive. I use it a lot for securing templates etc. I've also heard it called "snot tape" because when you remove it by rubbing it off with your fingers, well, you'll see why.
I use Spectape. http://www.spectape.com
Another SpecTape guy here. Good grip for template work. Comes off clean.

Everywhere I look on websites (Amazon, eBay, Woodcraft, etc.), Spectape ST501 is listed with a photo of tape whose core is clearly labeled "Permacel". I assume that Permacel and Spectape are two different products. Amazon customer service assures me that product description is for Spectape, so I may take a chance. I wish sellers knew what they were selling.
I run a guitar building school and do all our routing using templates and pin routers. This stuff works great and comes in a variety of widths. I used to use the 3m version of this product but this stuff works just exactly the same at a 1/3rd of the price. https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-10533/Double-Sided-Tape/Double-Sided-Masking-Tape-3-4-x-36-yds?FromMyFavorites=Y
Thanks for the recommendation of Spectape ST-501. I bought some online and it works almost too well. A little bit goes a long way.
