Hi folks,
I’m building a CD cabinet with full extension drawers. A friend showed me some metal cabinets he saw advertised that had a feature I’d like to duplicate. In order to keep the cabinet from tipping forward when a heavy cd drawer was pulled out, only one drawer could be opened at a time.
I’m sure there have been many clever ways to pull this off, but being a rather lazy sort I was wondering if someone actually sold a system that a fellow of average intelligence could install.
Any ideas out there?
Thanks in advance,
Tom

Hafele sells an anti tip system for file cabinets. One of such items is catalog # 237.44.113 FWW had a tip it published within the last year or so of a simple low tech idea using a cable so you could only open a single drawer at a time.
Thanks Rick, I'm trying to get into the Hafele catalog but it's a bit of a chore to do. Also, I did a search through the FWW archive for "tipping" and also for "cable" and couldn't find anything like you'd mentioned. I'll look through my collection when I get home, but if you can help me narrow my search that would be really handy.
Thanks,
Tom
It was one of those reader sent in tips. The guy got a prize for best tip. Essentially it was a cable through eye hooks and he allowed just enough extra cable to allow only one drawer to open. A bit more to it than that but when you see it you will see how obvious it is. Within the last year or maybe a bit more. I don't think the search will work for the tips column. "Methods of Work" is the column and it might be within 2 years.

Thought about it, and got it. Oh for pete's sake, how much simpler could it be?? That's elegant. Thanks for the idea!

Sounds like you got it. You will need to put a cross piece between the drawers in the back leaving just enough space for the cable. Put an eye hook on the top and bottom of the casein the back and eye hooks in the back of each drawer. So basically you need a length of cable to go between the top and bottom of the case and enough extra to allow the drawer to pull out. If the drawer pulls out 18" add approximately 36". Really simple idea.
Call hafele and use the part number I gave you!
