Amazon does not list the title you mention, here are the C. Pye books they know about:

Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk, cut it with an ax.

"Turning on Wood"..
I looked at all the porn pages and never found it.. Sorry...
"I looked at all the porn pages and never found it"- that is a bare-@ssed lie!Well, how about that- the blue underline was entirely unintentional and even appropriate!

.
Hey bear!
Where was the Borders????? I need the book!!!!! Any chance you're heading back that way???
Thanks!,
Michael
just got home from work , will try to get there tonight . if i do and it's there i'll pick it up and get it to you post haste..." He who makes a beast out of one's self, get's rid of the pain of being a man"
Fantastic...you are a God among men! It is Carving on Turning that I'm looking for, not any of the other titles and, since it's been OOP since 1995, I am amazed they would have it!
Thanks,
Michael
i just came back from borders mike...... and am very embarassed to tell you that the book i was flipping through was
"Turning Wood by Richard Raffan" i' m pretty embarrased about this so much that i was just going to e-mail you. but when you pounce the pooch , you have to fess up... so much for trying to be a hero.... deepest regrets... kent.." He who makes a beast out of one's self, get's rid of the pain of being a man"
Hey Kent....no worries man...sounded too good to be true anyway! But, I will tell you that I also recently got the Raffan book, as well as the DVD and he is a great teacher, so no harm done! You're still a hero in my book brother!
Thanks for the trouble you went to!
Michael
HAY YOU TRIED! Nothin' wrong with that!

Recently ordered a copy for $8.70 + shipping.

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.
Hey Jazzdog,
What I'm looking for is actually called "Carving on Turning", by Chris Pye. Is that what you ordered??? I'm drawing a blank at Abe.com,
Michael
Yep, that's the one.
I went back and tried the link to http://www.abebooks.com and it worked for me; sorry it didn't work for you. Abe books maintains a database of books available from book sellers all over the place; when you place an order, it is routed through Abe Books, but the book's owner is the one who ships it to you. My last order included half-a-dozen books, each of which was shipped by a different seller.
You can search by title, author, etc., once you get to the website. I even managed to obtain a copy of "Make a Chair From a Tree" through them, and it's been out of print for several years now.
Good luck,-Jazzdogg-

Hi Jazzdog,
Thanks for the help! Yes, I knew I was doing the search right, but kept getting weird results. Also, having checked every source I could think of, I must have been to ABE before, because as soon as I started typing in the names, the full title popped up in the box. But, I am encouraged by all the good words form guys like you so I will persevere!
Best,
Michael

Try here!
Jumped right on it, picked up the phone, and......They sold it yesterday! What's really funny is that I am in NYC and the place that had the book is less than a mile form my mom's house in Florida...where we are headed next week!
Anyway, I'm getting closer and sure do appreciate the heads up!

You can at least get his newsletter. You will have to keep trying. It may turn up used eventually or you might find a copy at a library you could at least read. I would think that carving on turning wouldn't be much different than carving in general.
As Pye said....
Hi Rick,
Your points are all well taken. I must say, however, I have been really impressed with his writing, have begun a lot of carving work, and have also just gotten a lathe. So, it seems like a good book to have. I was planning to study with him this Summer in Maine but my first big design/build job just came in so I will be here working and not in main carving and eating lobster! Lucky for the lobsters!
Thanks for the help!
Michael
Hey Michael, What is the nature of this carving job, and what do you have in the way of tools now?
Hey again rootburl (is there another name or does this one do the trick?)
At present, no commissioned work needing carving or turning, but I am working on a W&M cabinet with trumpet legs for us. I have the Raffan book and DVD, which are quite good, and am just taking my time making beads to get used to the feel of turning. For turning I have 5 tools...2 gouges, 2 skew, and a parting tools. So, no rush as far as the client list goes. There is a great lady here in NYC, Carole Hallé, who, among other carving work, does the carving restoration at the Met Museum. I took a class with her sometime back and will call her to see if she'd interested in doing some one on one teaching. Besides cleaning up the basics, I would like to get a teacher that I can take problems and questions to down the road.
As far as the picture you've sent, again I say it's amazing work and really interesting to me. I assume these are root burls that you've turned and then carved. In the Raffan book, he does some bowl and box turning and I would further assume that it's the type of tools he using that I would need to begin what you're doing. As much as it's something I would LOVE to jump into, at the moment I am waiting to confirm that I have a contract to do some restoration and design/build of a veteran's memorial chapel i a big church in Brooklyn. If that has indeed been inked, I will (happily) have my hands full for the Summer. BUT, woudl love to be able to check in with you later on down the line!?
Thanks,
Michael
Root was the name of my best friend & companion dog. He is now chasing squirrls in dog heaven. Burl is my current mutt. I guess I should get away from rootburl. Other than being one of the lowest knarliest parts of a tree, well if the shoe fits, you know. Well my name is Keith Newton, and I'm in LR Ar. When I signed on here. I thought we were not supposed to use our real names, and I just have not bothered changing it.

It needs a major re-work, but I can't afford it at the present.NYC hummm, You are in a great market area. What is your shop like, and how is the over-head?
