My dad and I want to make a pair of Pie Crust tables.
We are having troubles finding two pieces of Mahogany for the tops.
We would like the pieces to have a little character.
We are looking for pieces that finish 35” and 1” thick.
Anyone know of a lumber yard that might have these available?
I have searched the web and sent several emails out. No responses yet though.
Any help you might have would be appreciated.
Thanks, Chris.

Chris,
Burlwood should have what you're looking for.

Have a look at Gilmer.

Edit: I just went to their webpage, some of the instrument stuff is amazing. They're about 30 minutes from me, not much to look at, just lots of logs slabbed out, stacked to the ceiling, except for the smaller stuff which is some of the nicest.

try >>> http://www.irionlumber.com <<< They advertise Mahogany , dense and dark,widths to 40 ".
Last time I was at Irion they had 8' wide by 20' long pieces in stock.

Did you say 8 feet wide. Was that a typo or are you serious? I've been there before but didn't see any 8' wide stuff. Don't get me wrong, I'm not questioning you. Weather permiting, my son and I are planning a drive out to Irion one day next week. I just want to see a plank that wide.Did you see that piecrust tabletop hanging on the wall of their shop. Talk about workmanship of risk. Can you imagine the sick feeling in the pit of your belly if you were the one responsible for that boo-boo.Be not afraid of going slowly. can you elaborate on that pie crust table? what was wrong with it?

This 36" piecrust tabletop looks to be all finished except for dishing out of the top. All the fussy work is done. The scalloped carving is finished around the perimeter and whoever was recessing the top had a mishap with a router. Looks like maybe the bit dropped down and put a 3/4' or 1" gouge in the top. All his hard work was for nought, except for maybe an expensive lesson.Be not afraid of going slowly. Be afraid only of standing still. chinese proverb
wow, that must have sucked pretty bad!

Yes, 8' wide. This was several years ago. I stopped by to pick up one piece of wood and start to a relationship with them. They were unloading a truck full of lumber. I lot of pieces too big for their racks. I suppose it was for a special order.
I don't have the time to drive there anymore (2000 miles round trip), so I have their wood delivered.
How do you plan to remove the interior of the wood to leave material on the edge to form the piecrust? Router or outboard on a lathe? I am curious.
I plan to follow a book "Making a Pie Crust Tea Table" by Tom Heller and Ron Clarkson. They have tons of pictures and almost step by step instructions on making a table. In the book they use a router to take out most of the material in the center of the table, the remaining is hand work.
