I just want to pass a along a new -to me- discovery.
A while ago I read in a boat building book about a long scraper that was held between two boards for fairing wooden boat hulls.
I used an old saw blade from one of those one-handle-pack-of-blades type. The blade is 16.25″ long. I hold it between two 1x4s screwed together. After taking the blade out for sharpening and putting it back a few times I drilled in 3/16 wooden dowell indexing pins so the blade could sit up against them before tightening the screws.
I put a square edge on the saw with a file and put a burr on it like a card scraper. The last time I honed the blade before putting on the burr.
I am finishing up a chess board for Christmas. I wasn’t sure how to make it flat. I wanted to make a sanding drum, but the cost of making the drum, not to mention the time to build the table under it, sent me back to hand planes and this scraper.
I am surprised at how good the results are. The chess board is as flat as can be as far as I can tell. If someone is interestd I can try to post a picture of the scraper after Jan 1. Hey, I could even show off the chess board-made from an old Black Walnut fence post, a standing dead Honey Locust tree and a little White Oak from an old sectional couch. 😉
I am just so surprised and want to pass the tip along!

I'd love to see the scraper and the chessboard as well. I love the description of the materials!

You scraper tip is a definite nominee for submission to the magazine of your choice! Thanks for posting it.
As you can see, we're all hoping for pictures (hint, hint).

Thanks friends,
I wish I could post pictures now and a little more of my experience, but alas, the pressure of the season is upon me - I have to give the chessboard in a day or so - Christmas tends to come early at our house.
