I often get to say page 29 in a forum topic only to go back to page 1 as a result of hitting the wrong key.Is there a quick way to return to a higher page ?

Do you mean within a single post or the 29th page of posts (i.e. 29 of 1000 shown at the bottom)?
When I am on page 29 and touch the wrong button it brings me back to the first page.If there is a simple way to get back to 29 as there is in most systems ? Does Ben know?
That happens to me when I use the search function. I have not found a way to get back to the place without going to the bottom of every page and clicking on "next".
If there are multiple pages, sometimes you can just alter the number in the url.
That worked great MJ. I went back to page 25 on the search "rules of thumb" by typing over the page number in the URL.

I would need specific examples. Usually the page is actually reloading, so you should be able to just use your back button to get back there. The only time I can think of where this might result in a hiccup is if you sign in and then continue on.
I can't think of a time that I have had to do it on FW, but when I do experience that I get in the habit of opening search results in a new window or tab. Hope that helps.
Like MJ said......
Look at the URL your browser is displaying. It should look like this:
https://www.finewoodworking.com/discussion-forum?paged=2
Change the number at the end of the address to the forum page you wish to view and hit enter. I have used this method in both SAFARI and CHROME.
