I am interested in installing a shop floor, similar to that in Issue #160 “Low-Cost Shop Floor” by Scott Gibson, over my existing concrete garage slab.
My question is will “OSB” panels provide sufficent strength to support the typical shop tools, table saw, bench, band saw etc, with mobile bases?
Thanks in advance!

If there is enough suport for the OSB between the strapping then yes. An easy way to do this is place 3/4" EPS between you strapping to fill the voids. This will give you all the support you need and add some cheap R-value to your shop floor.

FYI - Have you checked the price of OSB lately. I was going to put some up on the walls in my shop, $18 bucks for 1/2" at the local Home Depot. When I did my ceiling a few years ago the same stuff was around $5-$6/ sheet. Plywood may be just as cheap as OSB and a smoother surface more durable surface.

Just Joe,
I just finished half of my 30' X 40' shop. Put 4 mil plastic under 1/4" carpet pad under 7/16" OSB. Used 3 "powder activated" fasteners down the center of each sheet of OSB to hold it down. I also put carpet tape along the edges as I laid them down. Painted the whole thing with three coats of SW Tread-Plex. I'm really happy with it! Total cost for the half was under $500.00 and I have enough of everything except the OSB to do the other half. Will wait till the price of OSB drop a bit more (starting back down now) before I tackle the other half. Good luck and enjoy your new floor.
