Making Windsor chairs and various handles, I always need turning stock. I’ve found at yard sales old baseball bats for .50 or $1. These are the finest quality ash or hickory, at a fraction of usual cost. Old water beds aare another good source of stock, usually very well seasoned Doug fir.

Go to a company that custom makes entrance doors. They'll probably give you enough turning stock to fill up several trucks. Tell them your a member of a local turning club.
ps - buying a door from them helps get your foot in the door, so to speak! Go to the factory, not the sales outlet.
