John, your book on maintaining shop machines has been very helpful to me. I’m currently rebuilding an 8″ jointer and have used your book the whole way through.
My question is: given modern dry lubricants, would you still recommend lithium grease as the lube of choice on the table ways? I am nearly ready to reassemble and have them greased up but thought maybe an alternative that wouldn’t attract sawdust and grime might exist.
Thanks,
Jeff Hallam

Stick with grease.
Jeff,
For this application, I would still use a regular grease. The ways are petty well protected from dust getting into them and the small movements of the tables tend not to pull any clinging sawdust into the spaces between the parts. "Dry" lubricants have been around for a long time but i am not aware of any machine maker using them as a substitute for more conventional greases.
