Dear Dr. Dan—
Try furniture paste wax (not the automotive variety), rubbing it on generously and then buffing it all off with a soft rag. It will lubricate the screws admirably while preventing rust and dirt buildup. Regular waxing of metal parts is a standard shop chore, and will help develop a wonderful, dark patina over time.
