Do you know where and how the lumber is being harvested? In other words is it coming as a result of Nicaragua's forestry efforts to promote sustainable forests and environmentally sound forestry practices. Or from other sources.
Bob
The lumber was cut by bandits from Costa Rica and was confiscated back by the Nicaraguin government. The material has been air dried for over a year.
The lumber is coming from a rich coffee growing area.
Depending on what species, you could list some of the better stock on e-bay if you like. However if you try and contact local suppliers I doubt they would be able to compensate you adequately for your time and energy involved in getting the goods here in the states.
Most of the dealers I know of have reps in South America and Africa who deal with the wholesalers personally to negotiate price, quantity and quality.
I suppose it wouldn't hurt to contact local suppliers to find out.
Otherwise, you could advertise in Fine woodworking/Homebuilding and other woodworking rags plus the internet through e-bay, as mentioned, and possibly Woodweb and craigslist.
It all depends on the quantity, quality, and your ability to store the material before selling.

I'm sure it's avalible what size are you looking for? I can call ahead and add some to the sample order.

All in all, It sounds like the lumber was illegally harvested and there was unmanaged distruction of rain forest timber. As much as I hate to see lumber being wasted. I dislike illegal harvesting more. I would be inclined to pass on this venture. If there is no market maybe the poachers will find another venue.Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

I have to agree with Bruce on the issue of illegally harvested lumber. Don't buy it.
It doesn't matter if it is great wood or not. Imagine if your neighbor came into your yard and cut down your walnut, apple, maple, pear and cherry trees, got caught, so the police sell the wood to the highest bidder for a profit.
If the market is not there, the thieves would not have cut it in the first place.
Reminds me of many years ago when a friend of my neighbor was selling stolen car stereos. All of his buddies were buying them. Then when my neighbor was having a party, the thief broke into all of their cars and stole them again. (He got caught red-handed)
Tony, your profile doesn't say where you're located. I saw something about the West Coast. Which port is the lumber coming into??
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Redondo Beach, Calif.
Since when is Redondo a port. They do tie up a lot of small boats there though.
Redondo Beach was the first port in Southern Califonia way before San Pedro and Long Beach. Later on San Pedro became the port of Choice after it was dreged and then Long Beach.
Redondo was always a deep water port, because of the Redondo under water canyon. Ships still to this day, still call on Redondo, but for ship leave, which is the US Navy.
The USS Ronald Reagan is due to call soon.

Ok I gotta ask a couple questions here.
The stuffs gotta go through Customs especially since at least one of the specie you mentioned is subject to CITES restrictions.
Customs does not list Redondo Beach as a port of entry.
My chart which is admittedly 5 years out of date shows a depth in the channel of 20-30 feet. The Reagan if we are talking about the carrier, needs an absolute minimum of 37 feet just to keep afloat.
I see no pier at Redondo longer than 350 feet, the Reagan is I believe 1027 feet.
There is no mention on the citys events page nor the marinas events page nor the harbor authoritys events page nor the Reagans events page of any scheduled visit to Redondo any time this year.
There appears to have been no deep draft cargo or commercial vessels since about 1925 when storms washed away the last of the long piers that extended out to the canyon.
I'm having trouble getting 1+1 to equal 2 here. Am I missing something?
With all due respect,
Don

You are correct the ships only anchor off of the coast. then travel to shore via shore boats. the only business out of Redondo Thease days is fishing and the crews which service Chevron Oil. Foss.
All shipments arrive via port of Los Angeles and Long Beach these days.
Hence my puzzlement over your statement that a shipment of lumber is arriving at a non commercial, non customs, shallow water marina that is not a legal port of entry for foreign goods.

Are you saying the Reagan is going to anchor out and transfer the off duty portion of her 6000 man complement to shore for liberty in small boats?
Since the house is on fire let us warm ourselves. ~Italian Proverb
Yes, that ship has extensively trained for every possible thing that it could do except for running liberty boats back and forth to shore for when it anchors in a place like Hong Kong harbor. Therefore, it will anchor off Redondo Beach and run liberty boats back and forth for a period of not less than three days. It is also considered appropriate punishment for the officers of the air wing who are required to be assigned as "liberty boat officers" (something I have done many times). No one knows exactly what the air wing officers are being punished for, possibly it is just on general principle.
For SD - I will take about 25 bd ft of Pau Marfim. The conditions are that you don't get any money 'til it gets to my door and it has to be cheaper than Woodcraft. Thankssomuch, Ed
I know they contract liberty boats in Hong Kong and must anchor out, but were not talking Hong Kong here where there is no other option. Were talking about a small town in southern CA that is close to deep water ports and appropriate moorage ie: Long Beach, LA among others. I figure using the boats the Reagan carries it will take 66 trips for just ships company, not counting the air wing. Just seems farfetched.

The last ship at Redondo was this year last spring and it was the USS Bunker Hill.
1. What has that to do with the Reagan (6000 crew on Reagan vs 335 on the Bunker Hill).
2. What has that to do with the Customs requirements?
3. I am far more interested in #2------------------------------------

Tony,
The main question I would have would be not about sustainable harvesting, but can the lumber be legally brought into the US since it was originally stolen? The fact that the Nic. government is selling the stuff doesn't mean it can be legally imported. I would hate to see you import a few container loads of the stuff and then customs confiscate it because it didn't have the proper paperwork, etc. Just a thought. It's probably first-rate wood, as bandits don't usually cut puny, crooked trees into boards to sell. Good luck, and let us know when the samples come in what's available and the cost.
Lee
I was notified last night the wood will most likely not ship till mid November of December. I did tell them to add turning stock to the order.
Furthermore the government is asking the company to sell the lumber for them it is a leagal sale to the exporter. The docs are coming in due time that is what the hold up is.
Thanks for your intrest and concern.
Tony
