So Cal- 4/4 s2s sl1e cherry-$5.19, pop 1.49, hard maple 3.49, lyputs 3.14, red oak 2.89, soft maple $3.29, white birch 2.89 + 7-10% overage for straight lining. Best prices I have found locally and consistent.
Have you tried Reel Lumber in Anaheim?. Off Kramer and the 91Frwy
yes, I used to use them, but I got tired of digging to the bottom of the stack for useable material. One time I called to make sure they had an adequate supply of hard maple on the floor, the salesman checked and said they had just put out over 1500BF of 4/4 on the floor. I made the hour drive and what did I find? About 1400 BF of lumber that looked like it had been culled tossed on top of the stack.
Since this thread has long since been hijacked, I guess I'll chime in: Recently moved to Pasadena, so what are some of the other lumberyards around here you guys would recommend? MacBeath?
Thanks,
-Lou
I live in Temecula, so I don't know many yards up in your area. There's Reel and Ganahl in Anaheim, Peterson in Fontana, Cherokee in Upland.
Reel does have a wholesale division for larger purchases. They are called... dang, I can't remember. They do great milling/mouldings. Setup charges are reasonable. Oh yeah, they're called Regal Mill on Santa Ana Street
How about Kelly Wright hardwoods... just down the street from reel lumber
800-422-4800, if I remember correctly(ask for Bob Ayala)
Austin hardwoods in santa Ana( great all around hardwood/hardware. lumber quality/quantilty is hit or miss)
Cut and Dried hardwoods in Solana beach(my favorite for the good stuff)
Exotic woods of latin America in Carlsbad(my other favorite, I still like cut and dried better)
to name a few
Thanks guys. Checking those out will keep me busy for a while!
When you ask a question like that I assume that you are looking for a good deal on wood. Is that the case or do you buy whatever they have at whatever price they want?
The reason I ask is that the cheapest way to buy wood in your area is to go to a sawmill.. For example southern hardwood lumber (white oak) in grade FAS (the highest grade) sells green and rough at the mill for 87 cents a bd.ft. poplar is 68 1/2 cents, soft maple is 75 1/2 cents Cherry is $1.75
If you buy a thousand bd.ft. you've saved enough to pay for a 20 inch industrail planer. Don't need a thousand bd.ft. right now? then find someone to buy it with, a club or a buddy etc..
I shipped a truck load of mixed hardwoos to Temecula Calif and my buddy and his friends saved 44,000 dollars on one semi load. (and he only wound up using a little over 300 bd. ft. of cherry).
That's after paying to truck it to Temecula Calif. from Minnesota. The day the truck arrived there were 30 guys all helping to unload it and fill their pickups..
