Hi, Guys,
I need to create a horizontal lumber storage rack in our school shop. I’m looking at the various designs listed on the FWW website. The building is framed with metal studs, so I am considering how to have a sturdy wall-mounted rack, hopefully something that I can make in the shop, that will hold this kind of weight. Does anyone else have experience with mounting a lumber rack on a wall with metal studs? BTW I can run verticals down to the floor to bear the shear (vertical) load, but there will also be “pullout” loads on a rack. I hope to store plywood in the lower 4′ with the lumber shelves above. I guess the essential question is am I going to have to open the wall to reinforce it, or can I mount directly to the steel studs….

I did this in my basement and ran the supports to the ceiling and braced the top with 2x6's attached the the floor joists, I went 2 joists just to be sure.
