I’m a hobbyist looking for good lumber sources in Richmond and central Virginia. I’m usually buying for a specific project, so I don’t buy in bulk. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Alas, you seem to get the same response that I get to the question for Louisville, KY.
Seems you need to go out of state for hardwood lumber.
I live in Earlysville, which is just north of Charlottesville and get most of my hardwoods from Northland Forest Products in Troy. It is probably a 30 min. drive west from Short Pump on 64. The have a good selection of hardwood and good prices as well. You can pick through the piles as long as you want but be prepared to hunt someone down when you want to check out. It is a real casual operation.
Northland also has a retail outlet in Manassas, but I haven't been there.
Siewers is in Richmond. They have a decent selection, not great but you can pick what you want.

Go to Northland Forest Products in Zions Cross Roads just off route 64 about 40 miles West of Richmond. They are the best anywhere, big supply of rough cut and planed hardwoods of every variety, all kiln dried - poplar, cherry, maple, cyprus, walnut, mahogany, etc. You can pick through the huge stacks of material and get what you want. A guy will help you. It is a mill type atmosphere with a lot of covered outdoor buildings. It is definitely a high volume place, quite large. Prices are good, credit card or cash, take with, no delivery. They are open some Saturday mornings, but best to call in advance and make sure. I have been buying lumber there for six years and love the place. Just got several hundred board feet of 4/4 bird's eye maple, wonderful stuff. They have 4/4 up to 12/4 in some varieties.
Colonial Hardwoods off I-95 in Springfield is worth the drive. They have an awesome selection of hardwoods and sheet stock, and the people there will bend over backwards to help you out. They also have a good selection of veneers and hardware, not to mention a wonderful selection of books. You can get a good idea of what they have at http://www.colonialhardwoods.com.
Happy hunting,
-Tom
How far you will to go? I used to live In Roanoke, and there is a guy that sells lumber at a good price just off the blueridge parkway in Floyd Va about 30 minutes west of Roanoke. If you are willing to use some gas to go get some good stuff resonable, let me know and I'll send you a contact.
I saw your message about finding hardwood near Roanoke that you posted last year and would like to find out the name of the place you mention in Floyd. Also any other suppliers your know in the area. Have you ever tried Wall Lumber in NC?
Thanks.
I was getting ready to buy from Wall, till I found the supplier in Floyd and the source in the city there was darn close, so I did not need to travel. I still have it on my computer at home. I'll check this afternoon and let you know.Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
I just happen to think, I had posted that info here a long time ago. Here is my post to the two sources I used. If the guy is still in Floyd, use him. He had the best prices around.
