Thanks everyone for their input!! I was looking for some cherry and maple to make a chess board. Thanks for the suggestions of the suppliers, I will check them out.
I just purchased some very nice 4/4 and 8/4 cherry from The Woodery in Lunenberg, MA. http://www.wooderylumber.com . They also had some nice Maple (incl tiger), and red or white quartersawn oak, among others.

Hi - try Downes & Reader Hardwood Co., Inc. in Stoughton, MA P.O. Box 456 tel. 1-800-788-5568 their zip is 02072 It is on Evans Drive.
On Cape Cod in Hyannis try Shepley Lumber but you would need an account there.
I don't know where you live Dave but if you find a good supplier please share it with me. I live on Cape Cod. I will relate my experiences to you. I have purchased wood at Downes and Reader in Stoughton. Not really a bad experience.
I went to the place in Cambridge on a Saturday a.m. when they were supposed to be open and the place was closed up like a drum.
I like Goose Bay but they are a little high.
Lately I have been purchasing on line from West Penn Hardwoods in NY. Been quite pleased.

pmmatty,
Anderson McQuaid in Cambridge has some good stuff but they are quite pricey...not so much in rough form. Usually people run up to Northland and Highland hardwoods which are quite close to each other and the prices are good. They are about an hour plus north of Boston.
Also, there are lots of Sawyers around..Maine, New Hampshire and Mass. If you pick the brains of the people at Woodcraft...or just take a ride up to Kittery and jump on 1A..you'll see them in the woods.

Thanks for the info. I will check those places out. PMM
I'll second Downes and Reader in Stoughton - good selection, nice people, open on Saturday mornings...

They're in York, Maine and deliver throughout New England. Good folk.
