Does anyone know of a lumberyard in the Chicago-land area that sells rough-sawn lumber to the public? I have the tools at home to mill the lumber, I just need to find a yard that sells rough lumber (hardwoods). I have searched in the yellow pages and the internet but all I find are yards that sell milled lumber, which is pretty costly. If anyone has any information please write me an email. I appreciate it. Thank you.

Twig, I used to live in suburban Chicago (Schaumburg.) If you're looking for deals on hardwood, your best bet is to hitch up your trailer and get out of town. There's a good mill out west of you in Kirkland. Also, Ken Burch's hardwood outlet in DeKalb (or is it Sycamore now?) is a great place to shop (Just wish I could remember what Ken calls his operation these days?) I left there in 1990, so my memory is getting a little dim...But there are a lot of great little mills in western and southern Illinois. If you're willing to buy in reasonable quantities (100BF or so) you'll pick up some super deals at these small mills.
Jon, Thanks a million! Sycamore is just about a 30 minute drive from my place. I'll definately check it out as well as Kirkland. I appreciate your help. Thanks again, Twig

Kirkland Sawmill is on Route 72 which is Main Street in Kirkland, Illinois, about 9 miles west of Genoa. It is a tiny town out near route 39. Hours are M-F 8 to 5 and 8 to noon on Saturdays.
Kirkland Saw Mill, 606 W. Maine Street, Kirkland, IL 60140 815-522-6150, Ron is the name of the owner...
Only local woods. Tons of Oak, both Red and White. Usually has Maple and poplar, but only occasionally other woods. Lots of 4/4 and 5/4 stock, but limited on bigger stuff.

Big selection, but very, very pricey.
A good place to go for exotics around here. Any usual sheet goods, too -- exotic faced ply, for instance. They can get it, if they don't have it, usually. Contact them here: http://www.owlhardwood.com/

Good selection, nice people. The best prices in the area. Their species selection is not as broad as others but they carry many different stock sizes (up to 12/4).
Two locations near Milwaukee.
SOUTH STORE- Off I-94 in Racine County. Exit at 7 Mile Road (Which is 25 miles north of the Illinois state line). Take the west frontage road north one mile to store.

If you are south of Chicago, The Woodworkers shop in Morris. They are on Route 47 south of the river and I-80 on the right hand side.

Closed Sundays.
Paxton. They have a retail store in Chicago.

Another mill for Domestic Wood, you're going to have to go to GC Mill in Woodstock. Just a little shack off of Route 14. It's a haul, but Gerardo and Cindy will treat you right and it's worth the trip for any serious amount of lumber. Contact them at 815-334-8174.
Rockler in Schaumburg area has a decent selection, prices are fair. Same holds true for Woodcraft in Palatine (847-776-1184) has some stuff, but nowhere near as much as Rockler or Owl.
Mikecirc, thank you for the information, it will definately come in handy. I appreciate it, Twig
