magnificent magnetic duo: Jointer and planer – sizing the siblbings
Hi all. So I am currently outfitting my shop and on the top of the list are a jounter and a planer. It is undoubtably common to have a large (at least 12 inch or plus) planer and yet most jointers in smaller shops are only 6-8 inches. Everyone reccomends getting as big a planer as you can afford, but my quesiton is this: What good is a larger planer without an equally large jointer to accompany?
I have a few ideas of my own, but I’m curious what other people have to say. Thanks,
-T

To Hell With What Others Have To Say I Want To Hear More
from you about "Siblbings" and how you use them.
Just when I think I have finally purchased all the tools I need I hear about this S i b l b i n g s.
What is it ?
Where do I get one ?
And I was going to say how much does it cost but to heck with the cost. I want one. I simply have to be on the cutting edge of this craft.
siblbings are distant relatives of siblings

Ah . . . Oh Ha Ha Thank Goodness
I would've liked to buy a new tool that I don't already have but not this day I see.
Queenmasteroftheuniverseandbabybunnytrainer says I have enough tools and that I should, perhaps, now consider making something with them.
She is always right you know. Quite right.
same-sized siblings vs. Big Brother
I'm of the opinion that the choices should be based on what the individual actually does, and the size of the boards commonly used to do what he/she does. That said, there is something to be said about having a big jointer - if it does what needs to be done in the doing. ;-)
Smaller jointers (my first was a small Delta 4") are pretty much limited to edge jointing, of course. Larger ones can also be used for flattening a slight cup, thereby avoiding hand planing. Quicker is slicker, they say, but that isn't always right. When I could afford it, I "graduated" to an 8" Inca (short bed) combo machine, which I still use. I look longingly at larger machines, especially ones with long beds, but simply don't have the room.
