Just finished a mahogany boat deck step and client wants a marine spar varnish finish, however the marine spar varnishes I have looked at all say do not apply to decks or walking areas. Asume it is because of the slippery surface. What would you recommend instead of spar varnish. Step is stained with Lyman wood filler made to match Lyman Boat original finish. Step will be exposed to all kinds of weather here in Ohio.

What you can do to deal with the slipperiness is to add some of the Interlux microballons to varnish to be used for the treads. The Interlux product will be transparent in the varnish. The other problem with spar varnish is that it is on the soft side as a wear surface, though I assume if it is being used to step onto the Lyman that boat shoes are mandatory.
