My wife and I have just bought a mahogony front door for our house that was delivered unfinished. I have ample experience finishing cherry and walnut but have never tackled mahogony. I am looking for advice on staining and finishing with a spar varnish. Also, I need reccomendations on what brand spar varnish to use?
Thanks.

Personally, I would question the need for staining Mahogany but, a Mahogany grain filler (Belen's) might be called for. As for a spar varnish, I would recommend either Epifanes Clear or Interlux Schooner Varnish 96. Both have UV blockers and are formulated for the extreme conditions found in a marine environment. They are available through your local marina or chandlery. FWIW.

A large entrance door company here in Houston uses Deft interior/exterior poly for all their doors. 95% of their doors are mahogany. I've had one of their doors for 5 years and it still looks new which is saying a lot considering Houston's climate. Thin the first coat, then sand after it cures, then apply 3 or 4 more coats unthinned. The door company suggested applying another thinned coat about every 5 years.
