Just wondered how many other people ever have similar circumstances…I bought a new Makita 18v Impact Driver from Amazon and received it Friday. First thing I notice is no zip tie sealing the hard case. Open up the case and there is the drive with battery attached, no packing material at all inside the case, both batteries fully charged. Hmmm I say, looks like I got someone else’s return. Maybe perfectly fine, but then again maybe not. It just irks me that you buy something new and they send you a return item. So back it goes on their dime and they are shipping a new one (hopefully a factory sealed new one).
Funny thing as I was in Home Depot today and saw the exact same driver, they only have one in stock and sure enough its a return too. All the other Makita tools were factory sealed. Am I too picky?

I'd want a sealed one too. I like to know the history of my batteries.

I had the same exact experience a few years ago with an accessory to my Porter Cable 24" Omnijig (dovetail jig). I needed another template that didn't come with it. I had a large cabinet job and didn't want to hand cut dovetails for 30+ drawers.
When delivered, it was definately used, and the screws were in plastic sandwich bags. Also, the aluminum template had a small gouge in it, obviously made from a router bit that hit it.
I'll never order from Amazon again.

I don't mean to bash Amazon per se. I've ordered tons of stuff from them and they usually are responsive if a problem arises. I've just never had this situation happen. I did buy my PM66 from them about 6 years ago and they shipped it freight delivered into my garage for nothing. Unfortunately the top was out of spec for flatness, it had a shallow spot and they shipped me a new saw free and picked up the first one. Can't complain about that too much. I am more aware now when I go to the big box stores in checking packaging on things I buy. It's amazing how much return stuff gets put back out on the shelf. The replacement impact driver arrives Wednesday...we shall see :-)Jeff
Guess I have lived a charmed life, my items from Amazon have been factory sealed. Now that I have said that the gremlins will come out.... I by my Makita items from Makita Outlet.com. I have the 18V drill and impact driver set and am very pleased. Light easy to use, good tork, nice balance and almost no runout in the chuck.
Get one with the ziptie on it! AZMO

Jeff,
No, you are not too picky. I would have sent it back also. RE: Home Depot tools, absolutely always a factory sealed carton. The few HD tools I have returned immediately made it back onto the shelf.
Never had the first problem with Amazon, but Hechinger sold me a used Jet jointer for new, and the free freight ended up as no freight charge from Hechinger, but a hefty bill from the trucking line. Hechinger will not get any more business from me: the "low-low prices" mean "no-no customer service". After several dozen purchases from Amazon, I have never had a single problem.

It happens frequently with Amazon from what I've picked up online. Are you being too picky? Technically, probably not. You have the right to demand a new tool, but if it looks and feels great, it's probably OK to keep. Could be someone just opened it up and changed their mind. (Why I don't know! LOL)
