Every time I log on here the same thread is at the top, “What would you buy”.
At Breaktime the most recent thread shows up offering a sense of change. The same old thread showing up time after time conveys stagnation.

Hi Lee,
I agree that this topic seems to repeat regularly and anyone who has visited the sight consistently over the course of a month or more would start to wonder why.
On the other hand, It seems to indicate that there are always new people joining the forum and much of it new WW blood.
So, my question to you is; With new people constantly coming on board, as indicated by the repetition of the same type of question, is it really a problem of stagnation, or does it demonstrate a need for a forum category to hold all the "newbie type" questions and some link to a guide on how to use the search function?
Edit - I just read Mel's post. Lee, did I totally misunderstand the direction of your question? If so, my humble apologies.

Rennie,It is probably me who misunderstood Lee. I understood him to mean that there is a specific thread that continues to show up first as the Knots screen shows up each time he logs on. I believe you were interpreting him to mean that a lot of people are asking similar questions about what to buy. English is a wonderfully rich and ambiguous tool. We often thing we are communicating better than we actually are. We'll soon find out what Lee really meant. To me there is a more imporant question than "What should I buy?" The important question is: "Where will I get the money to support my woodworking habit?" I studied drawing for a long time. Finally I read something that really hit me. The person said: "an important issue in drawing is what not to put on the paper." WHAT IS REALLY NEEDED???? In woodworking, for me, that translates to: "Do I really need yet another tool, or can I get by happily and satisfactorily with the tools that I have?" Of course, then I see the Lie Nielsen planes and the Adria saws, and the latest routers that can be adjusted from above the table without buying an attachment, etc etc etc. and I start to drool. I can usually resist the temptation by just going down to the workshop and making something with the tools that I have. So do I need to buy a Veritas or a Lie Nielsen shoulder plane? Please say yes.MelMeasure your output in smiles per board foot.
Mel,
"So do I need to buy a Veritas or a Lie Nielsen shoulder plane? Please say yes."
If you did not live 2,400 miles away, I would do my best to convince you to buy this plane as I suffer from the same budget woes. However, I would then be afforded the opportunity to possibly borrow it from my WW neighbor!
So, do you need to buy a Veritas or a Lie Nielsen shoulder plane? In Aragorn's words, "What does your heart tell you?"

Lee,
I can't solve your problem, but I can tell you that the problem you are having is something that I have never experienced on Knots. That fact should help in the diagnosis. You can get very quick service by contacting Customer Service. Look at the top right of your screen and you'll see "Customer service". Click on that, and you get the info to contact them, either by phone or by email.
The phone number is:
Customer Service: 1-800-477-8727, 1-203-426-8171
From Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Eastern time.
I had a problem a few weeks ago in which I could not log on to the FWW website. They solved it in one day. Nice folks!
Hope that helps.
Mel

Try emptying your cookies and temporary files.
But don't get carried away, otherwise you may find you have to enter passwords, security codes and details of what you had for breakfast before you can be recognised! It's easier to do a system restore after emptying that lot.
Problem I have is my first name is John but I have always used my second , David. I cannot register so because it is not the first name on credit/debit cards.
Lee, best to write to Mark or Matt and ask them forumhelp@taunton.com . Emptying your cookies might work, but some cookies are good cookies, so whether or not to dump them all is something to consider. You can go in an delete only the ones specific to Taunton.

It's Fixed.
Matt and all,Well, my gripe was that every time I log on to Knots the same thread is on the screen. "What would you buy" is the name of the thread and the last post to that thread was on July 26th. Breaktime gives you the most recent post and related topic on the opening screen, not a weeks old thread.I'm not asking for a newbies folder, frankly I think it's not needed because woodworking education is a continuum, not a given set of stages. At any rate, when I came in here just now the same old thread lead the way. Matt, I never got a reply from you on the other topic we were discussing, I'm not sure where we stand. I'll resend the email and get the ball rolling again,Lee
You Know!!! You don't show your face or words around here for months and then expect special treatment!
How's it going with that bumb wheel of yours.
See ya soon.

I'm bipedal again but my walking could best be described as lurching. I'm off crutches and the cane. All in all it's rehabbing very well and I'm back to work again.I've been lurking, still around, just not inclined to spew.Lee
Well then, I must have misunderstood your gripe. Still, the new folder was something we've been planning for a few weeks now so when I started reading your thread I decided to flip the switch on it.
As for your real technical issue, I've never encountered that. I suspect either it's a caching issue on your computer, or you need to look at your user preferences, which you can access through the "my forums" link at the top of the page.
I'll talk to sysop see if he has an idea.
Hi Lee ,
I understood you the first time , I have been encountering the same problem , only with a different thread , although it is a thread I had replied to months ago .
When I log over to say Breaktime and then back to Knots the most recent discussions pop up as they should the first time we log on .
Maybe we've been baad !!!
glad to hear your on the mend

I know I've been bad, I just didn't know I'd been caught,Lee
Lee, I've been having the same problem. The same old thread is on the screen every time I come in. I was waiting to see the solution, guess I'll wait a little longer.
Glad to hear you're getting better.
If I am understanding you correctly, you are getting the same topic listed first; time-after-time despite having read it already.
Unless you actually select that thread with your cursor in the left hand column so that it turns purple; it will not be flagged as "already read". Hence it keeps showing up.
Try selecting it, and then see if it goes away.
Regards,
Dan
The reason mine kept going to the same old thread was because I had it saved in my favorites as a short cut not realizing that the thread that was up at the time became like the home page .

Lee
could be you have bookmarked that posting instead of the home page. It's happened to me before
Nope, my bookmark predates that thread by a very long time,Lee
Now that I understand the question......
I have a similar problem - every time I choose "Unread Messages to Me" the same two threads are at the top, neither have had postings in many weeks. I've contacted customer service and am awaiting a reply.Regard it as just as desirable to build a chicken house as to build a cathedral. Frank Lloyd Wright
I think I figured it out,Bookmark this page- http://forums.taunton.com/fw-knots/messagesI'm not sure this page ever shows up in the browser window, I found it by looking at my Breaktime bookmark. I suspect it's a carry over from the Great Change a while agoLee
Well, the prize goes to Stan-The-Man.In spite of my comment about my bookmark predating the thread my bookmark did direct me straight to that thread. My computer and I have not been seeing eye to eye for a few weeks and I think I'm nearly due to scrub it's puny little brain with Drano. And for you, Stan-the-Man...,For your prize you may select either of the following;A tool budget good for $100,000 US to be spent at the dealers of your choice, or,A bedroom suite including headboard, footboard, (2)chests of drawers, (2)bedside tables and a dressing table handcrafted from the wood of your choice by Lee Grindinger. Please submit this prize claim to Yabba-Dabba-Doo-I'm-Rich!@Taunton.com with the following validation code, 4E793YX2m4nB690Lee
