Make something SPECIAL… I did.. However I had no idea that I did it at the time..
My greatest woodworking project… EVER….
On a whim.. I picked up this book… Making Working Wooden Locks by Tim Detweiler..
So I made one from the book just for ‘FUN’ .. Now… who to give it to? I was thinking of one of my grandbabies…
One morning I was putting on some wax to shine it up a bit and that neighbor lady and her child walks by the garage… I usually just waved when they went by my garage shop and the mom would wave back and we never talked….
I yelled out.. I got something for you daughter… The Mom looked at me kind of funny… I yelled out I’m old and harmless.. Well anyway.. We talked a bit and the child never smiled or said anything… I showed the little girl the key and lock and showed her how to open with the key and close it by pushing the shackle down into the hole.. The little girl did not seem impressed… Well, they went off and assume to their normal rounds….
Several days later I got a letter from her mom.. Mom said her daughter has a lot of problems.. I was not told what or why.. Just that she is within herself and hardly ever plays or talks…
Her mom told me that lock was the only thing she ever played with in her life.. She just loved the key and opening the lock.. AND she sleeps with it..
I feel REALLY GOOD today… Well it was yesterday and I still feel good.. Never know what life brings…

Good karma at work. Good on ya, Mate.
Simple acts of kindness can have quite an effect. Sounds like your lock opened a big door.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Good job Will, thanks for sharing with her and with us.
Now, how do we come up with 6 billion little girl locks?
John
Thanks, Will. Maybe this will be contagious, and spread into something really great. May we all go and do likewise.
That's great Will, good for you and the little girl! Heartwarming story.

GO CUBS!!!
Hi Will,
It sounds like your neighbor's little girl MAY have a form of Asberger's Syndrome, like my grandson. People with this condition have a very narrow range of interests, but plunge into them very deeply. You MIGHT be able to help this girl by making and giving her similar toys. She might learn two things: that other humans are interesting and that she is interested in things other than the one lock that you gave her.
It's just my opinion, I might be wrong.
But it is certain that what you did was a fine thing.
Great experience Will. After hearing that experience of yours, I don't know how anybody can believe this is all by chance. God bless!
