hi to all,
I don’t know where I read , that you could make your own sanding sealer.. I don’t know if it is better to save some money ( about 22-30/galon in my area) or what is the other convenience, but can someone tell me a formula for it, and do you really save money by doing it yourself? I am using hard maple for kitchen doors…
Thanks
Manny

Buy dewaxed shellac flakes. Dissolve in denatured alcohol to desired consistency. Spray, brush, or wipe on.

Say, ya'll gettin' ready for Rita down there? I remember Carla in '61, and she was a booger....
Yeah, I went out yesterday and bought 15 gallons of bottled water, 2 dozen batteries, and 2 dozen cans of Campbell soup!

Manny,
What finish are you going to use on the kitchen doors? You don't necessarily need sanding sealer and with the wrong finish, you can create a problem if you use an incompatible sanding sealer.
I've never heard of making your own. Sanding sealers usually include zinc stearates that just make them easier to sand (and weaken the finish). Shellac is a good option that's universally compatible. Zinnser's "Seal Coat" is a good choice. http://www.zinsser.com/pdf/TDB/SealCoatTDB.pdf

Thanks Paul, it looks that I can find that in Home Depot? The finish is wipe on poly, which I had good results, I am using it on maple ( by the way, do you know what is a good stain/technique I could use to make it look like or closer to cherry?)..

Your local home center, hardware, or paint store should have the Seal Coat Manny. It's a good option with polyurethane since it's de-waxed shellac. Bullseye Shellac contains wax and isn't a good choice with poly.
Maple is not easy to stain. If you don't want to go too dark, a dilute dye will do a nice job. For dark colors on maple, it can get pretty complicated to make it come out nice (e.g., Staining Maple).
Jeff Jewitt has an article on a dye and glaze finish that you might like - Early American Maple.Paulhttp://www.finishwiz.com
Paul,
there is now Zinsser's Bulls Eye de-waxed shellac seal coat-seems that it is not well distributed in the U.S. Very wanderful stuff-goes with anything, including those touchy catalysed poly lacs etc.I use it all the time.Philip Marcou
