I was working on a project and cutting down some 8/4 hard maple and noticed some very interesting pattern in the end grain. I cut it into some book matched pairs (see photos) and intended to use them in cutting boards.
But, as usual, I made a mistake. I cut them thinner than I should have. They are about 5/8″ thick. I like endgrain cutting boards to be 1″ ish or more thick.
Would it be sensible to build a 5/8″ board around them and then (somehow) glue another to the bottom? I’m considering cutting a couple of grooves through each half and using a loose tenon of a contrasting wood.

Perhaps this is too pretty to be a cutting board, besides being too thin. Maybe it deserves a life as a box lid or a trivit. Maybe a raised panel.
Great idea. Thank you. As soon as I saw your suggestion I realized it would look great on the front of a bread box I have on my agenda.
