Making a Jurassic Park Explorer replica, need expert advice about this hardwood custom center console
Hey there woodworkers! As the title mentions, I am indeed building a JP Explorer and it’s coming along brilliantly. Without further ado here’s what I need to make;
So it looks like a hardwood or it could be (skillfully!) vinyl wrapped and I’m not so sure about the joinery used. I own enough tools and a good router to recreate this but would like to know the approach you might use. I also considered making it out of MDF and using a faux finish with gel stain but it’s all up in the air until I start on this next week.

Movie props aren't always as finely made as they appear. I doubt it's made with a veneer since those corners would never allow the veneer to wrap and mold and stretch around it. I'll bet it's mdf with an air-brushed faux finish. Jointery is probably simple glued buttt joints. It only has to last long enough to survive filming the movie.
I agree that prop makers can achieve some nice looking fake textures and not many of the camera angles provide the ability to scrutinize this piece. That being said it is difficult to ascertain if a veneer or vinyl wrap was used instead of hardwood.
To me the joint looks like it would be pretty tought with a hardwood, perhaps hidden dovetail and a rounded/routered edge. Then there's the groove that looks like a small dado routed groove. Is it likely that a props department when through all this trouble for a simple piece of the set? Maybe.. then again they spared no expense!
Well I guess I'll be using MDF here... ugh. So heavy! Thanks for your input!
