I have rectangular bench dog holes in my workbench and use simple rectangles of wood as bench dogs. No problem. At some time in the distant past, however, I saw a method for gluing a wooden “spring” to the side of the dog to hold it in place until pressure is applied. Does anyone know what I’m talking about?

Here's one approach.

I've also seen pictures of ones where the dog body was kerfed at about at 10 or 15 degree angle and the spring glued into the kerf.
MARKRODERICK,
Here are some photos of the dogs I use. Similar to the ones in the magazine but not exact. I had some left over maple and ash from when I built my bench. The springs are ash and I used small brass screws to secure them to the dog. I think I cut the angle on the bottom about 10 deg. The overall length is 5" with the springs being 3".

Thanks to both of you. This is exactly what I was looking for.
