I am tuning up a Stanley spokeshave I have using an article from FW October 2002 issue (“Soup Up Your Spokeshave,” #158, pp.45-49). I am having difficulty finding 1/4″ thick brass stock to make the cap iron for the spokeshave. Finding a machine shop with scrap brass stock, as suggested in the article, has proved futile.
I would appreciate any help in locating some brass stock.

Well, you could call some metal recyclers in your area. Or:
mcmaster.com has a wide selection. 1/4"x2"x12" is about $14. Many other sizes and shapes available.
Thanks for your help on my brass cap iron problem

Glad I could help. We buy a lot of little chunks of oddball materials from them. Usually cheaper when you just need a small piece then special ordering it from the local metal supply yard.
If you have a metal supermarket near you they should be able to cut you off a little piece. they are a bit expensive, but they have no minimum order.
