Hey Fellas, I am currently working on a piece of furniture and have added burl madrone to areas of about 14 by 27 in. The piece is being stained with a zar wipe on stain (med to dark and brown in color). I am affraid that the piece being dark will make the burled detail go away. I have to stain the piece dark, So what should I do or what can I do to the burl to make it stand out more? The top coat will be a satin finish. I was thinking of maybe shooting just the burl in a different sheen. What do you guys think I should do?
Thank you, LMC
p.s. the piece is done in cherry w/madrone burl

I've played around with burls a great deal. I have 917 bd.ft. of burl and 9 6"x6"x10' posts to show off and not found a way to improve on the look of raw wood. The clearer the finish the better the burl stands out (IN MY HUMBLE OPINION) would it be possible to tape off the burl and finish it with a clear satin finish?
Lacking that I found a brite light shining on the piece seems to bring out the figure in burl better than any other thing I've done, although it's not always possible to have a bright lite shining directly on every piece you make..
French, The piece is a server that will double as a mobile bar. It will be tough to shine light on the piece. I'll send a picture.

I understand, I have these wonderful burl timbers and some are tucked into corners where the light doesn't highlite their beautiful figure..
Any stain or finish will somewhat cover up the burl. use the clearest you have and maybe even go for a gloss since satins tend to absorb more light..
If your going to stain every thing dark, why not just use a dark burl? Your customer isnt going to care what kind fo wood it is as long as it matches right? That being said, why not try water-based analine dyes?
Good point hdgis1, I was thinking I should have used walnut burl. I guess you learn from your mistakes!!!
Thanks for the advice, LMC
