I want to build a chess board with inlaid chess piece icons. i.e.symbols of the king, queen, bishop. etc.
I know this type of thing can be done using a router with a template to produce dovetail butterflys, poker icons, circles, and such . Is there any such process available for chess pieces? If, not, is there another alternative besides marquetry?
Thanks for the help.

Dear Dovetailor,
One way or another, you're going to have to cut away part of the squares on your chess board and fill the spaces with the shapes of the chess pieces. If you're using relatively thin commercial veneer to make the squares, you could probably do the cutting with a craft knife. If the board is made of thicker stock, then you could use a router or a scroll saw. The advantage of a scroll saw is that you can pretty much do the entire cut on the saw, avoiding the need to clean up corners with a chisel. The saw also allows you to cut the space and the piece that fills it at the same time. The router's faster at first, but you'll have to do cleanup by hand. But if you plan to use thick stock, something too thick for a scroll saw, then you'll probably have to use the router.
I'd also suggest posting your question on Knots. One or more of the thousands of woodworkers who use the forum is almost sure to give you the kind of detailed answer you're after.
Good luck,

Thanks David. I'll give that a try.
