I am starting to make some ebony staining material by soaking steelwool in vineger. When it is finished in 2-3 days, what is the solution composed of?
Is it toxic? will it last any length of time in a sealed jar after the excess steelwool is removed?

Mike,
It's a basic iron compound. Don't seal it up tight as it will expand and remove the lid on it's own
I assume it will last for quite some time.
have you ever considered using an ebony water dye mixed up double or triple strength?
Peter Gedrys.
I have found that the solution is iron acetate and I have tried it on some walnut and it does a good job of turning the wood black.
Atlas,
I put together a short video on the process. I let the steel wool soak for a few weeks but everything I've read suggests that a few days is fine.
