I see some beautiful inlay banding strips for sale, and I want to know how they are made. One fellow-woodworker makes his own, and says he uses the technique of Parquetry. Can you direct my question to someone who can explain how this is done ? I am familiar with inlays using Marquetry, but this does not involve any straight lines or square corners. The banding strips are all made using straight lines and square corners. Maybe what I need is a good reference book? I hate to buy things and incorporate them into my projects. The project is really my creation when I build the entire thing. Thank you!

Thomas,
I have done this and for the same reasons you want to. It is a little complicated. I have done it through a series of glue ups, cuts, reglue ups, cuts, reglue ups cuts etc. There is a book I purchased that showed me how to do it. It is a very crude book, and not terribly easy to follow but it wilol get you where you want to go if you follow it. And it will also get your mind thinking in such a way that you can understand how to glue up the various boards and cut them in such a way to create your own designs. Your cuts have to be extremely precise. I convert everything to metric. Some of the designs may require to glue, cut, and reglue six or seven times depending on the design, but you will be amazed at what you can do.
Anyway the book is called Sstep-By-step Inlay Banding Production. Written by R.F. Loeffler. The ISBN number is 0-963-23872-8.
Good luck,
Michael

Hi Thomas.
I'm a bit embarrassed to report that we do have information about making your own banding, but it's not available on our Web site at the moment.
We are just finishing up an article to come out in the next issue of the magazine (and our Web site) on July 31, that details techniques for creating a few different banding designs.
We also published an article in issue #166 (Nov/Dec 2003) that demonstrates how to make a few Federal-style banding. Unfortunately, that article hasn't made it onto our Web site yet.
So. Here are two suggestions:
1. Send me an email at [email protected] with your mailing address and I can photocopy the article from #166 and mail it to you.
2. Wait until July 31 to get access our upcoming article.
