Countless numbers of trays like you describe have been made with nails. If these are going to slide in and out on a supporting surface, you could nail or screw on a bottom panel, up into the sides, front and back of the tray. All the weight of the contents will be directly transferred to the supporting surface. If you're planning to mount the trays on side drawer slides, the nails or screws will have to support the weight of the contents by themselves. L-shaped drawer slides might be preferable to side mount, as the former extend under the tray sides. Just a thought.
