I have found that I can make my own wood dye by mixing the colors of inkjet printer inks in whatever proportions needed for the desired color. Thin with denatured alcohol.
I occasional have a customer that wants a rosewood handle darker than normal (Cocobolo or Bolivian Rosewood). The dye penetrates well and produces an even tone. 1 or 2 ounces will go a long ways.

"1 or 2 ounces will go a long ways." Jeez, I hope so. That stuff's expensive! Thanks for the tip, though. Do you buy the generic refill stuff to get the ink?

I would like to point out that ink jet ink is probably poisonous, so don't use it on items that need to be food safe.

I wouldn't think the feds would allow poisonous inks to be used on paper touched by millions and probably eaten by 1000's of kids. But, I don't really know.

The inks aren't poisonous. Typically, the solvent base usually is.
I wouldn't go drinking shellac, but it's on Skittles. The older I get, the better I was....
