My wife and I will be building a custom home next year and I am considering making my own molding rather than buying the warped and flawed commercial variety. I think that I could get the more attractive wood grain that we desire by making our own, maybe some cost savings as well?
Dose any one have any suggestions about this? How about on books and which planer/molder brand you would recommend for this? (This is a good way to sneak a planer/molder in for my shop as well. Yea, I’m sneaky……..)
Thanks

While it certainly can be satisfying to make your own moldings. You should be a aware that custom mill work with real woods, and full depth profiles is widely available--just not at big boxes, or run of the mill lumber yards.
Out here in the NY - NJ area there is a company called 'Dykes Lumber'. They produce a catalog that lists more different moldings than the average interior decorator could ever want or use. The quality of their stuff is excellent too. If you need to purchase good clear stock, you may find it much more expensive than purchasing what you need, ready-made. Go to a GOOD lumber yard (not Big Orange or Big Blue) and ask to see the calalog for moldings and trim. You will be surprised at the quantity and QUALITY of the stuff available. Try to google Dykes Lumber and see if they have a catalog on-line. But.... if you've got your heart set on purchasing a molder, then do not look in the lumber yards.
